The obverse in the center of the coin has a stylized representation of the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henrigues, his sword and castle of Guimarães. On the right side of the sword has an inscription ""Guimarães 2012" and the logo of Guimaraes city, who was named European Capital of Culture for 2012 years. On the left side of the sword is depicted Portuguese shield. In the outer circle were painted 12 stars.

The reverse side depicted the nominal value of the coin from 2 euro.
